I see in you
what used to be in me,
an optimism toward the world.
In my tarnished soul
chards of glass are imbedded,
by the haste of ignorance.
My eyes have seen
the night burn to ashes
one too many times.
And what was left
was a burned out shell,
of what could have been.
But with your romantic love,
I feel again like a child
racing in a starry field of dreams.
Tasting chocolate ice cream
for the very first time,
watching Saturday morning cartoons.
Childlike things, yes,
but moments of happiness,
just like the first time I saw you.
A sign of things to come,
finally happiness to a man
in a burned out hull of a ship.
Was life dead in the water,
slowly sinking to the depths of hell,
though it didn't really matter.
Love was wasted on this desolate soul,
no emotion behind the eyes,
just a fade to black, then to zero.
Ecstasy took flight with but a kiss,
so did my hope for normalcy
in a world where all seemed lost.
If not hell would be seen
in a shattered mirror,
charred glass in the reflection.
